This is an optional benefit offered by Microsoft (you can purchase coverage for yourself and/or your eligible dependents). The cost for AD&D insurance is determined by the coverage level you elect. You pay for employee-only coverage using pre-tax dollars and employee and family coverage using post-tax dollars. To learn more, go to Prudential.
Note: The amount of coverage you elect for yourself determines the amount that is available to your eligible dependents.
Coverage for yourself
As a Microsoft employee, you can elect coverage from 1 to 10 times your annual base pay, up to a maximum of $1,500,000. When you reach 70 years of age, the available coverage amount is gradually reduced.
- 70-74 years of age: 65% of the coverage amount is the maximum.
- 75-79 years of age: 45% of the coverage amount is the maximum.
- 80-84 years of age: 30% of the coverage amount is the maximum.
- 85 and older: 15% of the coverage amount is the maximum.
Coverage for dependents
- If you elect to also cover your spouse/domestic partner (without children), the maximum coverage amount is 65% of your coverage amount or $500,000, whichever is less.
- If you elect to cover your spouse/domestic partner and children, your spouse/domestic partner’s coverage is limited to 50% of your coverage or $500,000, whichever is less; your children can be covered up to 15% of your coverage amount ($75,000 maximum per child).
- If you elect to cover children without a spouse/domestic partner, the maximum amount of coverage is 25% of your coverage amount per child, up to $75,000.
- Children are covered from live birth up to age 26.
Designating a Beneficiary
If you die in a covered accident, AD&D benefits are paid to your named beneficiaries. If a covered dependent dies, you are the beneficiary of any amounts paid from the Plan.
Benefit Payment
Accidental death benefits are payable if you - or an insured dependent - die as the direct result of a covered accident, as follows:
The Plan also pays full or partial benefits for certain serious injuries other than loss of life. All Plan payments are in a lump sum, unless otherwise indicated.
